New Gallery Now Open

After months of preparation, building and moving, we’re thrilled to announce that our new gallery is now open!

Our new space is the third iteration of James Makin Gallery, which has previously been based in High Street, Armadale, and Cambridge Street, Collingwood in its nearly twenty year history.

Having been based on Cambridge Street for nearly ten years, our move to 89 Islington Street, Collingwood, is an exciting step in our nearly 20 year history. Our new gallery is located in a warehouse of mammoth proportions, exquisitely renovated by architect Tristan Wong (SJB architects) – the co-curator Australia’s exhibition for the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale. It features a 5.5 metre apex ceiling, four metre gallery walls, two large exhibition spaces, a private viewing room accessed by a concealed, pivoting wall, a client bar, and the polished concrete floors that have become synonymous with James Makin Gallery.

Reflecting on our move, founding director James Makin states:

“By engaging an architect to design a top tier exhibition space, I was able to fulfil a number of visions for the gallery. First and foremost, it is a space that supports our artists and reflects the high calibre of their work – it is important to me that we work for our artists in meaningful ways to represent them to the best of our abilities. Our new space is an investment in our incredible artists. Secondly we wanted to break the mould of a simple and sterile white cube gallery. We’ve added texture, warmth and dynamic architectural features to create a welcoming and interesting environment for clients and visitors, while at the same time being able to accomodate the exhibition of work of all shapes and sizes. From small works in intimate settings, to big and bold works, our new space provides an interesting viewing environment sympathetic to the needs of our artists and clients.”

We’re looking forward to welcoming you into our new home.

Now located at 89 Islington Street, the gallery is open Thursday to Sunday 12-5PM.
