J Davies, finalist in the 17th National Photographic Portrait Prize

S & T in the Window (Edition of 5 + 1AP)

You may have seen J Davies’ outstanding ‘S & T in the window’ on the cover of Art Collector, and now we’re pleased to announce its inclusion in the 2024 National Photographic Portrait Prize!

‘On the third floor of a converted warehouse in the heart of Collingwood, Surej and Tom embrace one another in the frame of what the apartment’s residents refer to as The Smoking Window. The contorted web of limbs protruding out from bare bodies creates an affectionate nest for nurturing, comfort and closeness. This private moment, happening behind closed doors and in open windows, is an invitation into Surej and Tom’s own personal, sensual and sensuous celebration of queer intimacy – the image welcomes a wider audience to contemplate their own experiences with intimacy, in its many forms and contexts.’

One of Australia’s most prestigious photography prizes and entering its 17th year, the National Photographic Portrait Prize (NPPP) provides a powerful visual record of the year that was – a celebration of identity, both collective and individual. View the finalist exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery from 22 June – 22 September.

Voting for the NPPP People’s Choice Award is now open. Head to the link in our bio to cast your vote.
