Margaret McIntosh investigates spaces of familiarity and feeling – suburban brick homes, well-loved campsites and classic interior scenes from your family home, or your first share house. These are nostalgic spaces, ones that resonate with our core memories. McIntosh’s latest solo exhibition, Daytime Telly is about the comfort of formulaic and repetitive subjects – the memory of being home sick from school and insulting in shows like Ricki Lake, The Phil Donahue Show and Days of Our Lives. These shows were soothing in their predictability.

For McIntosh, moving through the suburbs is not dissimilar to flicking through the channels of daytime telly – a crop of storyline or narrative grabs your attention, you stay a minute, you move on. Yet, when you move on, you know it’s still going to be there, or be there again. They’re staples of the everyday landscape, their predictability and banality give comfort and a sense of place.

Margaret McIntosh is a Melbourne based artist. In 2009 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at the Victorian College of the Arts where she received the Maude Glover Fleay graduate award. McIntosh completed a Masters of Art Therapy at Latrobe University in 2016. Her forthcoming exhibition, Daytime Telly, follows a sell-out solo exhibition in 2020.
