Abstract art offers a space where emotions and personal perception take precedence, transcending representational constraints. This exhibition explores the variations between hard edge abstraction and abstract expressionism, two contrasting styles within the abstract movement.
Hard edge abstraction employs precise geometric forms, vibrant colours, and bold lines to create compositions that prioritise the interaction between shape, colour, and space. This style evokes a sense of order and balance, emphasising the harmonious integration of visual elements. In contrast, abstract expressionism embraces a more spontaneous and emotional approach, utilising gestural brushstrokes, drips, and splatters to convey states of being. By capturing raw energy and intensity on the canvas, abstract expressionism emphasises the unrestrained expression of emotions.
Clement Greenberg aptly stated, “Abstract art…is not the creation of another reality but the true vision of reality.” Greenberg’s remark highlights the belief that abstract art, far from being detached from reality, offers a distinct perspective through which one can perceive the world’s intricacies and essence.
