Jack Rowland
Artist’s Statement
Through his hyperreal and high-key chromatic oil paintings, Jack Rowland aims to alter our perception of the natural world and invite us to rediscover our familiar landscapes. Rowland depicts nature as unknowable and unpredictable, a giving and powerful force that harnesses all life, one that we must respect and surrender to. Simultaneously, through the lens of psychedelia, Rowland’s work reflects the ways in which a change in psyche and an altered perception can influence one’s interpretation of their environment, and even lead them to psychologically experiencing different realms. He therefore creates a contrasting dynamic amongst his own paintings, employing saturated and vibrant colours to celebrate the natural world as Utopia in some works, while applying eerie colour schemes to others to suggest nature’s unforgiving forces and a dark interpretation of one’s psychological landscape.
Previously, Rowland has explored the Australian landscape as unfamiliar, dreamlike, or even alien. Rowland’s new body of work “The Altered States” draws inspiration from his recent journey through the deserts of North America. While documenting his journey through California, Utah and Arizona, these paintings illustrate Rowland’s ventures both inward and outward through the magical landscapes of the natural world and his own mind.
Rowland has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne and has been a finalist in The Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize, The Hawkesbury Art Prize and The Albany Art Prize.Biography
