Mark Threadgold

Mark Threadgold

Artist Profile

Biography

“Mark Threadgold’s affinity with past masters is evident in his technical expertise. Traces of Caravaggesque naturalism and moody romanticism, combined with the textural invention of the artist, situate his work at the end of a linear history of painting. However, Threadgold also manages to dispossess tradition of the sole rights to painterly representation. He directs the formal techniques which were once employed to represent social and cultural icons to more subjective ends. Threadgold impregnates his work with a relentless subjectivity which repossesses his medium from the strict control of tradition”

– Dr. James McGregor, lecturer in History of Art and Architecture

Mark Threadgold has exhibited in selected group shows and solo exhibitions throughout Australia since 1998. His work is held in public collections in Australia and in private collections around the world. At a young age he was included in numerous national art awards, including his selection for three consecutive years in the prestigious Metro 5 Art Award, Australia’s richest art prize for Australian artist’s under the age of 35. In 2008 he won the Corangamarah Art Prize. Themes of life, mortality, psychology, personal development, and pedagogical theories are explored in Threadgold’s work, reflecting the artist’s vocation in education. His thought-provoking paintings channel the traditions of romanticism with the intent of emotional engagement.
